The site's area is located in a river valley of Nyamasheke district in the Western Province of Rwanda. The Nyamasheke District has borders with the Karongi District in the north, with the Nyungwe National Park (NNP) and the Nyamagabe District in the east, with the Rusizi District in the south, and with Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. Two pro-tected areas of major importance cover more than one third of the Nyamasheke District: The Lake Kivu and The Nyungwe National Park.
